SUKKOT
- JUST PERFECT!
Blue
skies, sunshine, colourful autumn leaves, baskets
of red applies … we could not have asked for
more at our celebration of Sukkot at Beryl's in St-Bernard-de-LaColle,
Sunday, October 8th.
Over 40 people came to the celebration bringing delicious
deserts and all kinds of salads to add to the huge
buffet table in Beryl's barn.
After enjoying this wonderful lunch, members gathered
in the garden to listen to Beryl's friend Karen Gay
play traditional Israeli tunes on her violin.
Thanks go to Rabbi Dahan from the Yeshiva in Napierville
for sending over a lulav and etrog - the finishing
touch to a perfect day - and especially to Beryl for
organizing this amazing celebration, which has really
become a community tradition.

AN
UNEVENTFUL AGM
Congratulations to
the various chairs, who presented informative reports on Finance,
Education, Religion, Membership and social events, and to our
Nominations Committee, chaired by the Past President, Mark Covet,
which did a great job filling the vacant seats.
New members of the board were elected by acclamation. Since
there were exactly the same number of nominees as there were
seats available, no vote was necessary. Beryl Tovim was re-elected
President, and the following members were elected as directors:
Laurent Azancot, David Bornstein, Laurence Herscu, Mike Parker
and Leo Wertheim. Serving their second year of a two-year term
are: Alain Assor (VP), Rosalie Miller-Hodson (Treasurer), Roger
Gilor (Secretary) and directors Ralph Abergel, Annette Benchetrit,
and Isaac Sayegh. Their positions will be up for re-election
in October 2007.
The first meeting of the new board has been convened on November
8th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Centre.
TEN
MORE PARTICIPANTS NEEDED
IN THE GROCERY FUND-RAISING PROGRAM
We would like to
welcome new participants to our fund-raising grocery program
and at the same time thank everyone for their participation.
Together, in October, for the second time in five months, we
reached our monthly target of $9,000 in gift card sales.
To date, in five months, our total sales reached $35,000. Our
annual goal is $100,000 in certificate sales, which would result
in $5,000 for the SSJC. To achieve this goal, we need to maintain
a $9,000 monthly average in sales over the next seven months.
To ensure sales of $9,000 a month, we really need 10 new participants.
At the same time, our current participants have to remain on
board.
Remember, a $50 gift card bought from SSJC buys you fifty dollars
worth of groceries. You buy what you want, when you want, at
no additional cost.
Not only can you use your Loblaw gift card for groceries, you
can also use it to purchase gas at a Loblaw's gas bar. In fact,
you will save an additional three and a half cents a litre if
you gas up at Loblaw's.
Everyone shops for food and most of us shop for gas as well.
So why not join SSJC's grocery gift card program with a minimum
gift card of $50? Plan on re-ordering your gift cards regularly
each month.
Help us to help ourselves. Together we can reach our annual
target of $100,000 in SSJC grocery gift card sales and earn
$5,000 for the SSJC. Take a moment, call us now, and order a
grocery gift card.

EVENING
AT THE COMEDY NEST
December 7, 2006 at 8:30
p.m.
Although we
are hoping that the grocery program will eventually bring
in $5,000, this fund-raising program will only really
impact in 2007. Meanwhile, the increased cost of the Rabbi
for the 2006 high holidays, together with less overall
donations in 2006, left an unexpected hole in the budget
that we have to try to fill. This is why we are organizing
an interim fund-raiser at the Comedy Nest |
Every
ticket sold for the Comedy Nest will raise $10 for the SSJC,
so please sell tickets to neighbours and friends! We chose a
Thursday to hold the fund-raiser because it is a night for professional
comics, not amateurs, and not as crowded as on weekends.
We have enjoyed really excellent performances at the Comedy
Nest in the past. Ryan Wilner, for example, whom we saw in February
2005, recently starred with a 45-minute spot on CBC's "Comedy
Now" and has since become one of Canada's top comedians.

We realize
that this fund-raiser may not appeal to our francophone members,
but unfortunately, there is no such comedy club in Montreal for
francophones, given that French comics have to be unionized and
it becomes too expensive then to hire them for this type of event.
In the past, this has been a really fun evening out. Tickets
are on sale at $12 from Rosalie Miller-Hodson (450-462-7870).
Please call to reserve or email info@minervahomestay.com.

The last SSJC dance

At the request of several members, we are holding another
dance and social evening on November 25th at 8:00
p.m. to kick off the year's activities for 5767.
We look forward to seeing you there |

so mark the date on your calendar and additional details will be
provided in our December Bulletin.
COFFEE AND CAKES…
TO DISCUSS IDEAS FOR A NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE WITH OUR MEMBERS
November 15, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Centre
Members are invited to
attend a brainstorming session to discuss the location and space
required for our new Jewish community centre. We need your input!!
We have just exercised our option of a two-year extension on our
current lease at Place La Citière. The lease ends on September
1st, 2008.
With the cooperation of our affiliate, the CSUQ (Communauté
sépharade unifié du Québec), we hope to purchase
or build a community centre, which will give the Jewish community
an official presence on the South Shore.
However, we have to find a location and put together a plan and
because the clock is ticking on our lease, we have to do it fairly
rapidly. This will only be possible with the dynamic assistance
of our community members. We urge you to attend this very important
meeting.
