SUKKOT AT BERYL'S

For the benefit of new members, our annual pot-luck lunch at Beryl's to celebrate Sukkot has become a tradition at the South Shore Jewish Community and one of our favourite events of the year. Beryl's 19th century home set in the countryside near Hemmingford amid brilliant autumn leaves and the musty smell of the soil could not be a more appropriate setting for this autumn celebration.
Transportation can be arranged for any member who needs it, so don't be shy, ask when you call Beryl to confirm your attendance.

SSJC CELEBRATES SIMCHAT TORAH 2006
Mark Covet

We will be celebrating Simchat Torah on Saturday evening, October 14, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. at our Centre.
Simchat Torah means " rejoicing over the Torah". It is a time when communities - adults, families, and children - join together with much merriment. Or, better said, it's a "freilach" celebration and that's what we plan on having.

Leonard Cohen will be officiating beginning with a short maariv service. He will then lead us in the traditional hakofat (Torah procession). With song sheets in hand, adults carrying our Torahs, children carrying flags, we will wind our way around and around the Centre, singing and dancing together, our voices echoing off the walls. We will end the evening socializing over a dessert Kiddush.
I, and I am sure many of you also, have fond memories of celebrating Simchat Torah with my parents. This year Simchat Torah falls on a Saturday evening, making it easier to celebrate together, as well as to include our children and grandchildren.
Let's plan on celebrating Simchat Torah together as a community, and let's make this year's celebration a truly memorable occasion. Hag Sameach to everyone.

SSJC GROCERY FUND-RAISING PROGRAM ON TRACK!
TARGET IN SIGHT!

Mark Covet (450-462-1409)

We have just completed the fourth month of our Grocery Fund-Raising Program. 45 participating families have so far bought $26,870 of grocery gift cards/certificates. At this pace we are on track to purchase $80,000 of grocery gift cards/certificates annually. With a little encouragement, and a little extra effort we should easily reach our target goal of purchasing $100,000 of grocery gift cards/certificates. This would give us an annual fund raising profit of $5000. For a small community such as ours, all I can say is WOW!!!!
Permit me to make the following suggestions to our participating members:
1. Order/reorder your gift card/certificates regularly each month between the 20th and the 28th of the month. Mail in your check (payable to SSJC) together with your order form so that we receive it no later than the 28th of the month.
2. We hope that you will anticipate your needs so that you don't run out of gift cards/certificates during the month, but if you do run out of gift cards/certificates, please contact the grocery fund-raising committee. We usually have extras on hand, and we will get them to you.
4. Always use your gift cards/certificates when grocery shopping.
5. Try to add someone else to our program (perhaps a friend, relative, etc.) If each of us adds one extra person to our grocery fund-raising program, we will easily reach or even surpass our $100,000 goal.

MESSAGE TO OUR NON-PARTICIPATING MEMBERS
(including members living in Montreal)

Please read the explanatory article below. Remember, our grocery fund-raising program doesn't cost you a penny.
Our $100,000 goal is within reach. Please call me now. Let me answer your questions, put your mind at ease, so you, too, can join our grocery fund-raising program.
Please, consider joining our program with as little as a $50 gift card. It's just as easy as it sounds.

TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT!!!

WHAT THE GROGERY PROGRAM IS ALL ABOUT

Members can help the SSJC raise funds without spending an extra penny when shopping for groceries. Simply purchase from the SSJC an IGA Gift Certificate, or a Gift Card redeemable at Loblaws, Maxi or Provigo. Both are exchanged for the full amount of groceries when you shop. There is no expiration date on the gift cards/certificates so you can shop whenever you want and spend as little or as much as you need. By shopping with these gift cards/certificates, you will enable the SSJC to earn a 5% commission directly from these food chains.
Please take a moment and complete the enclosed form and mail it, together with your cheque (made payable to SSJC), to our usual mailing address. The gift cards/certificates may be picked up at the Centre on the dates indicated on the order form between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
If you are unable to pick up your gift cards/certificates, contact us and we will try to deliver them to you or make alternative arrangements.
We hope you will re-order your gift cards every month. Shopping with these gift cards will enable our community to reach a necessary fund-raising goal.
If you have any questions, or need further information, please contact Mark Covet at 450-462-1409.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE 2006
OUR FUTURE LIES IN INCREASING OUR MEMBERSHIP

Mark Covet (450-462-1409)

It is not an easy task locating other Jewish homes on the South Shore. In fact, many of us felt that we were alone on the South Shore before we discovered the SSJC.
Over the years, our annual growth has averaged six new Jewish homes each year. Today we have close to 100 Jewish member homes on the South Shore, as well as around 20 additional member homes on the island of Montreal.
With help from our 100 Jewish member homes on the South Shore, as well as from our members in Montreal, we should be able to increase our annual growth rate. Let's put our heads together now. Let's aim to significantly increase our membership this year by "CHAI", 18 more Jewish homes.
If you know of any Jew living on the South Shore, who is not yet a member, please provide us with his or her name, address, and telephone number, and we will do the rest.

INTERNET BULLETIN
Rosalie Miller-Hodson, Editor

The October Bulletin will be the last Bulletin mailed indiscriminately to all members of the community.
The Bulletin costs the SSJC around $1,500 annually to produce and mail to the homes of members and other interested parties. With postage now at $0.51, our annual mailing costs this year will exceed $1,500.
For the past year, The Bulletin has been available on line at our website: www.cjrs-ssjc.com. Those of you who have already given us your email address are asked to read The Bulletin at our website at the beginning of each month, and we will send you a reminder to do so when The Bulletin has been posted.
Members who have not yet given us their email address will receive a telephone call within the next few days and we ask you to kindly give the caller this confidential information, knowing that it will never be given to an outside source and will be used only to notify you of community events or to advise you when The Bulletin is available. If you do not own a computer, of course we will willingly place your name on a special mailing list. Your cooperation is appreciated.

REGISTRATION FOR HEBREW CLASSES
OCTOBER 10, 2006 AT 7:30 P.M.

Registration for Hebrew classes will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. at our community centre. Hebrew classes are being offered free for adults this year, given that there was no response to our offer for free Hebrew lessons for children.

BOY TOYS NEEDED!

The Yeshiva in Napierville has asked our cooperation in donating toys for boys between 12 and 16 years of age. They are looking mainly for sports equipment such as bicycles, skateboards, soccer or footballs, baseball mits, balls, bats, or even board games such as chess or scrabble.
If you have any such items to donate, they can be dropped off at our community centre on October 10th or 11th, or at Beryl's on October 8th.

5767 A SPECIAL BEGINNING

Sincere thanks to Rabbi Daniel Epstein, an ordained conservative Rabbi living in New Jersey, who led services and brought 20 years' congregational experience to the SSJC. He led us in traditional song and prayer, and taught us many aspects of Judaism. He was more than a visiting Rabbi, he treated us as if we were his congregation.
On another note, you surely realized we had a substantial increase in expense. The Board decided to proceed nevertheless, using some of SSJC's reserve funds and we hoped that donations would make up the difference. Our thanks for the prompt payment of seats and for your generosity, however, we do still have some unpaid seats and additional donations are needed, if you haven't already donated. Your coopera
