UPCOMING EVENTS

SUMMER HOLIDAYS!
NO EVENTS IN JULY AND AUGUST

SEPTEMBER 9TH, 2006 AT 7:30 P.M.
FALL SOCIAL GATHERING & ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW

The SSJC and the Lions Club plant a tree for Max Nyveen
Jill Kestler-D'Amours

The sun shone brightly on Sunday, May 28th, as a group of approximately 30 individuals gathered at the St-Lambert Curling Club for one important purpose: to remember and pay tribute to Max Nyveen. The ceremony, which included the presentation of a newly-planted tree and a plaque, commemorated Max’s numerous contributions to both the South Shore Jewish Community and the St-Lambert Lions Club.

Max was a founding member of the SSJC, and an active member of the Lion’s Club for 39 years.
“We hope that the tree will grow strong and healthy, and that young people will come sit under the shade,” said Beryl Tovim, who spoke for a few minutes about her relationship with Max.

Kevin Erskin-Henry, one of Max’s good friends, also spoke at the ceremony. “[Max] was a classic gentleman,” Erskin-Henry said. “He loved to travel and meet new people. This is a fitting tribute.”
After the speeches, those in attendance were ushered inside the Lions Club to have lunch, where pictures of Max’s travels and some of his personal effects were on display. People were encouraged to sit, socialize, and above all, remember a truly devoted and exemplary member of the community, Max Nyveen.
September social gathering and crafts show
We are planning to have a social evening with an art and crafts show on September 9th. We would like to know if anyone would be interested in exhibiting and possibly selling their art or crafts. If so, please let us know and this early notice will give you time to prepare. The event will undoubtedly be advertised in the Canadian Jewish News and local South Shore newspapers.
So put this date on your calendar and plan on a fun evening with cakes, deserts, and possibly a short movie. More details will be announced in the September Bulletin.

The Bulletin is taking a vacation
There will be no edition of The Bulletin in August, to enable our staff to take a much-deserved rest

If you want to vote, you need to pay your fees
With elections coming up in October, the 30-day nomination period is from September 1 to 30. So if you wish to participate in the election process (vote, nominate, be nominated) you must have paid your member-ship fees on or before August 31st. (You can read our by-laws at our website.)
Grocery program - friends can participate

As you know, the more grocery certificates we sell, the more funds we raise for the SSJC.
Some of our members have successfully approached other family members, friends and neighbours to buy the certificates and participate in our program. Great idea!
Anyone can participate. You don't have to be a member of the SSJC.

Searching for a leader
As Leonard Cohen will not be available to conduct services at the high holidays, we are actively searching for a prospective rabbi or lay leader. In an ideal world, he would be trilingual (English, French and Hebrew) and would conduct services in the conservative tradition. We realize, however, that this is a tall order, and are prepared to consider anyone who has the necessary qualifications.
If you have any suggestions, or know anyone who can help, please call Beryl Tovim.

SSJC launches grocery fund-raising program

Members can now help the SSJC raise funds without spending an extra penny when shopping for groceries. Simply purchase an IGA Gift Certificate, or a Gift Card redeemable at Loblaws, Maxi or Provigo. Both are exchanged for the full amount of groceries when you shop.

If you shop using these gift cards, you will enable the SSJC to realize a 5% profit directly from these food chains.

Huge success

This grocery fund-raising program was initially launched in May. Thirty-five members participated and the launch was a huge success. Special thanks go to our 35 participants as well as to our committee members: Mark Covet, Roger Gilor and Mike Parker.

We sold $9,000 gift cards in May, which members will use in the month of June. At 5% profit, the SSJC earned $450 in the first month. At this rate, the program should bring in at least $5,000 annually.

We will be contacting our 120 member homes in mid-June so that everyone can order gift cards as needed for July. If everyone participates, we could double or triple our first end result.

Please take a moment and complete the enclosed gift card order form for June, and mail it, together with your cheque, to the SSJC.

Gift cards must be picked up as they could get lost in the mail. The enclosed form contains pickup

instructions.

Please re-order your gift cards every month. Shopping with these gift cards will enable your community to reach its projected fund-raising targets.

We have also enclosed gift card order forms for July and August for your summer months' purchases.

If you have any questions, or need further information, please contact Mark Covet, at 450-462-1409.

Together we can make it work!
