YOM HA'SHOAH

Members are invited to gather for candle lighting
and reflection on Sunday, April 15, at 5 p.m. as we remember
the six million souls who were lost in the Holocaust. SSJC
member Fanny Brenda will talk about her experience as a hidden
child. If you would like to bring a reading, please call Beryl. YOM HA'AZMAUT - ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE
DAY
CELEBRATION ON APRIL 28, AT 7:30 P.M.
Since there are several major events for Yom
Ha'Azmaut happening in Montreal, we decided to celebrate
Independence Day the following week with our own big
bash.
So come and join the party on April 28 at our community centre and enjoy dancing,
entertainment, refreshments and good company.
BAGEL BREAKFAST - ISRAEL'S GEO-POLITICS - MAY
6 AT 10:00 A.M.
This will probably be our last Bagel Breakfast
before the fall, so be sure to come and enjoy some oven-fresh
bagels,
fresh fruit and freshly brewed coffee! The topic on the
agenda is the importance of various geographical regions
in the
political sphere. The speaker will be confirmed at a later
date.
BAGEL
BREAKFAST – BIRTHRIGHT
Beryl Tovim
An interested group attended our last Bagel
Breakfast held on February 25th to hear about the BIRTHRIGHT
programme from
Danya Schwarz and Sophie Abergel.
This programme enables young people between the ages of 18
and 26 to participate in a ten-day tour of Israel – completely
free. The only requirement is a $300 cheque at registration,
which is refunded in its entirety if the individual is accepted
and completes the tour. Registration for this programme takes
place twice a year and the dates are usually advertised in
the Jewish press. We will try to keep abreast of this and
publish the dates in the Bulletin. Meanwhile, information
can be obtained on line: from www.israelforfree.com. BAGEL BREAKFAST - SAR-EL
Rosalie Miller-Hodson
On March 18th, SSJC members were treated to
a fascinating presentation on the SAR-EL volunteer programme
in Israel
given by Jack Bordan, the Canadian treasurer. Organized
by the Israeli army, the programme enables volunteers
to replace
soldiers in non-combat positions on supply bases thereby
freeing them to do more important work. Volunteers work
4 days a week, fed and housed by the army, and are then
driven
to Jerusalem or Tel-Aviv for a 3-day weekend. The programme
is available throughout the year, except during the high
holidays, and stints last 2 or 3 weeks.
The slide presentation was most informative, showing not
only the participating groups, but also the type of work
involved and on-site accommodation.
Our President, Beryl Tovim, participated in the programme this winter, and
was able to interject with first-hand experience of the programme, which led
to some
interesting exchanges.
Further information may be obtained at www.sarelcanada.org, or you can email
montreal@sarelcanada.org, or phone 514-735-0272. WE NEED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!
Rosalie Miller-Hodson
If you are still receiving The Bulletin in
the mail, it means we do not have your email address.
For those people still on the mailing list, we have to
get copies printed at Copie Express, we have to go and
pick them up, print out envelopes, fold the
Bulletin and finally take it to the post office. Do you want to volunteer
to do this? No? Me neither! So please, send me your email
address at info@minervahomestay.com.
Your address will only be used to send you The Bulletin or reminders of upcoming
events. P$$T! IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR!
Rosalie Miller-Hodson
We would like to thank all those members who
responded so quickly to the invoice mailed in January for
annual
dues.
However, lots of members have not yet mailed in their
cheques and we would appreciate your doing so as soon
as possible. If you have any questions regarding
the invoice,
please call 450-462-7870. JERUSALEM REPORT
Beryl Tovim
Members are reminded of the JERUSALEM REPORT,
an excellent magazine that includes articles by first-rate
reporters about
Israeli life, current events (background
stories), personalities, Israeli cultural life, book reviews etc.
If anyone is seriously interested I would be happy to pass on my copies by post.
