Tree-planting
ceremony for Max Nyveen
May 28
On Sunday, May 28,
at 2 p.m., we will be holding a tree-planting ceremony in memory
of one of our founding members, Max Nyveen, who
passed away on the day of our Purim celebration in 2004.
The ceremony is being organized in conjunction with the St.
Lambert Lions Club, of which Max was a veteran member.
The tree is to be planted close to the current home of the Lions
Club - the St. Lambert Curling Club. A plaque
will be erected showing Max's affiliation with the two associations.
Members are invited to join us on this occasion and attend the
reception afterwards at the Curling Club, 660 Oak, St. Lambert.
The cost of the tree and plaque is being shared by the SSJC and
the Lions Club and we invite any one of Max's friends who cherish
his memory to make a donation towards the event.

| Our
12th Annual Seder a successful event
Members of the SSJC
enjoyed our 12th Annual Seder at our community centre on the second
night of Passover. Emceed by Michael Fisher,
we read the Haggadah in English, French and Hebrew.
The seder was catered by Kosher Cravings, who provided professional
waiters to serve a variety of entrees, matzoh ball soup, braised
veal and olive chicken, followed by cakes, macaroons and coffee.
The social committee provided the salads and wine - a donation
from Roger Gilor.
Special thanks go to Roger and Rachel Gilor who
came back to the centre the following day to do the dishes and
mop! Thanks also to Beryl and her team for all the work in organizing
this memorable event.
SSJC gets some
welcome exposure on CH and CBC
When Rosalie
Miller-Hodson received a call from Mark Bergman's
research assistant asking her if she would be interested in doing
an interview about the SSJC on In Montreal, she leapt at the idea.
In fact, the SSJC's development committee had intended to contact
the station to try to get some airtime.
Mark Bergman had heard about the seder we hold
every year at the community centre and thought it would be an
appropriate topic at the time of Passover. Accordingly,
Rosalie and Max Benchetrit joined him in the studio and
discussed not only the seder but also the origin and goals of
the South Shore Jewish Community. The taped show subsequently
aired at 9 p.m. on April 12th and 16th.
Two days later, Rosalie received yet another
invitation from Bernard St-Laurent, the host
of CBC Radio's Home Run. Max was not available, but Rosalie did
the live broadcast at 4 p.m. on April 12th. "Radio was much
more fun than television," she said, "it was just like
sitting and talking to a friend. In fact, both groups were really
nice people and really put us at ease."
We hope this unexpected but valuable exposure will help get the
word out to people who are considering moving to the South Shore
- that there is an active Jewish life on South Shore and a well-established,
bilingual community - the SSJC.

Max
Nyveen left his estate to the SSJC
Max Nyveen was a founding member of the SSJC
and his devotion to the community was well known. So it came as
no surprise when his executor, Mr. Dowling, informed
Roger Gilor that in his Last Will and Testament,
Max had left his remaining estate ($13,000 approx.) to the SSJC.
Mr. Dowling presented a cheque to Beryl Tovim
on April 19, 2006.

Holocaust
Memorial Day
Beryl Tovim
A small group of
members visited the Montreal Holocaust Museum on Sunday, April
23rd. This was the first visit for most of us and I can only
urge those of our members who have not yet visited this Museum
to make every effort to do so. It is both heart-breaking and
inspiring.
The video interviews with survivors was the feature which remained
with me the longest – the courage, the strength, which
enabled them to continue rebuilding their lives.
One of our own members – Margarite Quddous
- has loaned the museum her doll which was with her during the
years she was a “Hidden Child" and it is displayed
in that section.
Shavuot service
planned for June 3rd
Leonard Cohen
has agreed to lead our Shavuot service on Saturday, June 3rd,
at 9 a.m.
The service will be followed by a dairy kiddush in the Shavuot
tradition and there will then be a discussion on the direction
this community wishes to assume for services during the high
holydays.
We hope that as many people as possible will attend and participate
in the discussions, which will assist our religious committee
in their selection of a leader for the high holydays.
Shop - and
save for the SSJC!
Mark Covet
is currently looking into a new fund-raising program that would
enable members to help the SSJC raise funds, without spending
an extra penny, simply by continuing to shop at their usual
grocery store.
Members would purchase food coupons from the SSJC for
IGA, Maxi, Loblaws or Provigo. The coupons are bought
dollar for dollar value for use in the large supermarket chains
mentioned above. The certificates are exchanged for the full
amount of groceries when you shop. By doing this, you will enable
our community to realize a 2-5% profit (depending on volume)
from the food chains directly. So you would be helping us to
raise funds by doing what you usually do every day - shop! It's
really that easy.
The program is currently being used successfully by our friends
in Quebec City. When we have it fully set up and appointed contact
people, we will give you additional information.
Getting
The Bulletin on line?
Rosalie Miller-Hodson
As I am sure
many of you already realize, postage is The Bulletin's
greatest expense. In fact, aside from rent, it is our
largest expense, period. If you would not mind reading
The Bulletin on line, we could send you an email when
the Bulletin has been posted at our website. If this works
for you, please email me at info@minervahomestay.com.
Library
books needed
Just a reminder
- we need books for our library. If you have any books
to donate, please contact Beryl. |
