Just singing in the rain!
About 40 members of the SSJC celebrated Sukkot on Sunday, October 23rd at Beryl Tovim's home near Hemmingford. Although we did not have the sunshine and blue skies of previous years, the rain was only intermittent and we were able to enjoy a wonderful get-together and pot-luck lunch.

A copious lunch at Beryl's house
Simchat Torah with Hersh Perlman

We were fortunate enough to welcome a special guest, Rabbi Dahan from the Yeshiva Or Menachem in Napierville. He was accompanied by his lovely wife Yamne and youngest child. He brought with him an etrog and lulav so that members of the community could say the brachot under the sukka and shake the lulav.

A copious lunch was served in Beryl's house. A great variety of delicious dairy and pareve dishes and deserts were brought by members of the SSJC.

After lunch, our members enjoyed music in the barn with another special guest, Manfred Pees. Manfred is a professional baritone, but also plays the accordeon, and he treated u to a variety of well-known Israeli, French, Russian and other compositions, while we all sang along heartily with the lively music.

Sincere thanks go to our President, Beryl Tovim, for making her lovely 19th century home available for this wonderful event.

Simchat Torah - a joyful and special celebration at the Centre

Mark Covet
I would like to begin with a very special thank you to Hersh Perlman from all the members who attended our Simchat Torah celebration at our community centre on October 25th, and a mishchoach - hearty congratulations - to Hersh for delivering such an inspirational and meaningful dvar Torah.
Hersh reminded us that the Jewish people have existed now for 5,766 years, in spite of all the many atrocities across the centuries, through good times and bad times, and as a single nation, united by the bonds of the Torah. I believe all those present shared my sense of pride at being Jewish as Hersh's reflection profoundly touched my heart.
Our celebration began with a Maariv service that culminated with everyone present singing and dancing seven hakafot with three Torahs. We ended the evening with a tasty kiddush with delicious cakes, pastries, wine and cheese, socializing with our members and reflecting on the dvar Torah.
When we arrived home, Lois and I reminisced on our celebrations of Sukkot and Simchat Torah with heartfelt joy at seeing the many happy faces in the community. We had the satisfaction of knowing that our community is growing and the bonds strengthening. We are looking forward to attending many more such happy events in the future

High Holidays 2005

Mark Covet
Congregation Beth Israel Ohev Sholom of Quebec City made this year's High Holiday celebration very special, with their gift to us of a permanent loan of a Sefer Torah. We were thrilled this year to read from our own two Sefer Torahs and to know that our Oren Kodesh now houses them.
We would like to express our gratitude to Congregation Beth Israel Ohev Sholom and the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors for enriching our Jewish lives.
We would also like to acknowledge and extend our special thanks to Peter Nobel and the Congregation Beth El which has loaned us a Torah for the High Holidays every year for the past 11 years, including this year.
Rabbi Arie Chark led our High Holiday Services 2005. We were pleased to have more than 45 people attend. Rosh Hashanah kiddushes and the fast-breaking Yom Kippur kiddush were organized by our President, Beryl Tovim. Our thanks to Isaac Sayegh, our religious director, Beryl Tovim and everyone who helped plan and organize services and kiddushes. Our thanks, as well to everyone who generously donated to the High Holiday services.

Bagel breakfast presents Joe King on Jewish Contribution
Heather Solomon

On Sunday, November 13, 2005, at 10 a.m., the South Shore Jewish Community invites you to a Bagel Breakfast featuring speaker Joe King on the topic The Jewish Contribution to the Modern World. Society is seeing another upsurge in anti-Semitism despite the fact that Jews have made an extraordinary contribution to human progress. Author/journalist Joe King has written a book, The Jewish Contribution to the Modern World, in order to underscore how nonsensical it is for people to hate Jews. It provides a sweeping summary of how the lives of everyone on earth have been significantly affected by Jewish ideas and inventions.
Mr. King has had a long career in communications and has collected 35 awards for his television documentaries and publications. He also is a passionate speaker on the subject How to Answer the Anti-Semite. Copies of his book will be available for purchase after the presentation with profits going to the South Shore Jewish Community Library. All are welcome.
The event takes place at the SSJC Centre in Place La Citière, 50 Blvd. Taschereau, La Prairie. Admission is $5.00. To reserve a seat and for further information, call Mark Covet at 450-462-1409.

Last call for Hebrew classes!
Rosalie Miller-Hodson

If you were not able to attend registration on October 11, you can still register for Hebrew classes by calling Beryl Tovim, at 514-877-5000 followed by 450-247-2686.
Intermediate adult classes (people over 13) are being given by Yaffit Ozgaon, who was our teacher last year, on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m., beginning on November 1st. A beginner's class could be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. if anyone is interested. Children's classes could be held on Sundays at a time convenient to the parents.

If you are sick, please let us know
Beryl Tovim

I recently learned of two people in our community who had been very ill. Unfortunately, it was after the fact and they had recovered by the time I heard about it.
So if you are sick, or you know of a member who is sick, please call me and let me know. It would be my pleasure to call or visit, and let them know that we care.

Please don't rely on a telephone call, check the Bulletin!
Rosalie Miller-Hodson

One of our members, who also happens to be a good friend, remarked to me at the Symposium that she had not received a telephone call to let her know that the Symposium was going to take place, and that she had found out about it quite by accident.
In response, I gently pointed out to her that it had been announced in both the August and September editions of The Bulletin, and that we now have 102 member families to call. Ten years ago, there were only 30 homes.
We tried very hard to reach as many people as possible by phone to remind them about the event, but we were not able to call everyone. Most of the members of the Board work during the day and some have additional responsibilities in the evening, so it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to call each and every one of you every time there is an event. This is why we have The Bulletin.
We are aiming this year for 150 member families, which we need if we are ever to have our own synagogue. All of our efforts will be poured into achieving this goal in the coming year. Yet, with 150 families, it will be even more time-consuming to reach everyone by phone, so please do read your Bulletin carefully and plan on joining us at all future events. Nevertheless, we will still make an effort to call you for major events and new programs.
On the other hand, if you have email, and would like to receive an email reminder, we would be happy to do so. The times they are a-changing!
