Pot-Luck Picnic In St-Hilaire
By Fanny Brender
Warm
and wonderful hosts, a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing country
setting, perfect weather, delicious food, good conversation and
lots of laughs …… what more can one expect at a pot-luck
picnic? … Much more, if your hosts are Jennifer Rose and
husband Louis. The orchard had been prepared for apple-picking
and the guests had a great time filling their bags with different
varieties of apples. For those of us who were too lazy or unable
to climb a ladder, bags of apples sat ready for us to take home.
As you can see, our hosts thought of everything. We were even
treated to a mini-lesson on how to recognize one variety of apples
from another. Last but not least, Jennifer entertained us with
her lovely voice and guitar playing. Alain Essor showing considerable
talent of his own often accompanied Jennifer on the guitar and
did a few solos of his own. Before long, everyone was singing.
Max Benchitrit was in particularly fine form, giving a great
rendition of Louis Armstrong. Thank you, Jennifer and Louis,
and the thirty-two guests who attended, for making this a memorable
August afternoon.

SHABBAT ROSH CHODESH AT SSJC
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 2007-9A.M.
Writer: Mark Covet
Let me begin by sharing my thoughts at the conclusion
of the high holiday season (Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and
Simchat Torah). This year, holidays were particularly well attended
and spiritually satisfying. We felt a true sense of community warmth
and togetherness as we joined in song and prayer.
Consequently, I am looking forward to this Shabbat and others as wonderful
opportunities to continue to grow and blend together as a Jewish community.
We are pleased to welcome the return of Leonard Cohen to our community. He
will be leading the second of a series of Shabbat Rosh Chodesh services on
Saturday morning, November 10th, celebrating the beginning of the Hebrew month
of Kislev. Following services, everyone is invited to visit and socialize over
Kiddush, sponsored by Isaac and Danielle Sadoun.
Let's plan on being together. Please reserve Saturday, November 10th on your
calendar now.

BAGEL BREAKFAST - LECTURE
By David Bornstein
Our
first Bagel Breakfast of the New Year will be held at our centre
at 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 25th. Mr. Stanley
Asher,
a noted
radio personality, will talk to us about “Jewish Radio:
past, present and future”. A question period and discussion
will follow.
Mr. Ascher is an author, an authority on the history of the Jews
of Montreal, and an executive member of the Association of Canadian
Jewish Studies.
Last year's breakfast lecture series was very successful and entertaining.
Our members came together, ate well, listened to stimulating talks
on a variety of interesting topics, and participated in lively discussions.
Please come join us in making this year's series of breakfast-lectures
as successful as in the past.

The Season of Our Joy!
By Jennifer Rose Lapointe
During Sukkot, the harvest festival is a time to be joyful. Well
much joy was in the air and we were all most definitely joyful.
A lovely prayer by Beryl outside under the beautiful branches
of the
Sukkah started the day and a delicious array of international
dishes filled the rustic setting where we sat amidst wild flowers
in the
lovely tea garden. We were entertained with old French songs
by Max Benchetrit and Alain Assor and their guitars as well
as some jazz
standards by Jennifer Rose and Julia Roman. A special surprise
was a visit from a Lubovitch Rabbi who brought his Safari Sukkah,
and
the men were invited to say the prayer with the Rabbi one at
a time in this green mobile sukkah, have sukkah, will travel.
The women
said their prayer after outside. It was actually wonderful to
have the chance to say the prayer individually. It was touching
and meaningful
and we were feeling joy to the highest power. The rabbi also
mentioned how nice our sukkah was.
It was my first time at Beryl's for Sukkot and I had a hard time
making my way to my car, it's such a warm, loving place that
you don't want to leave. Thank you to Beryl, the great cooks
and all
37 people who experienced the joy of Sukkot together.

HIGH HOLIDAYS 5768
Writer Mark Covet
Erev Rosh Hashana began with the introduction of
the first of several sepharade melodies to our services. Leonard
Cohen,
our leader learned
the tunes and taught them to us. With song sheets in hand, adding
a new spiritual dimension to our services, we raised our voices
in song and prayer.
Respecting the bilingual nature of our community, sermons by
Leonard, and selected readings by our members were presented
in both English
and French.
An Ashkinazi/Sepharade kiddush was given following service on
both days of Rosh Hashana. As well, a fast breaking kiddush followed
the
conclusion of Yom Kippur. Leonard Cohen deserves our special
thanks for his fine inspiring leadership.
Our thanks to the Goldrings, and the Gilors for their generosity
in sponsoring both Kiddushes of Rosh Hashana. As well, our thanks
to Rachel Gilor our social chair person and the ladies on her
committee for organizing and diligently preparing our kiddush
tables, and to
Isaac Sayegh our Gabbah. Together 47 members thoroughly enjoyed
celebrating the High Holidays 5768.

SIMCHAT TORAH 5768 ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE
By Mark Covet
The High Holiday season 5768 was well attended and thoroughly
enjoyed, ending with the celebration of Simchat Torah in our
centre on Thursday
evening October 4 2007.
Leonard Cohen began services with the Torah procession (Hakafot).
With song sheets in hand, everyone left their seats and joined
the Torah procession. Singing and dancing we wound our way many
times
around the centre. We were very pleased to welcome three young
voices to the Hakafot. Emile and Betty Soussan brought their
grand daughter
Sophie, and Nathalie Dumont-Levy attended with her children Deborah
and Raphael.
Following the Hakafot Leonard chanted the Torah readings. At
the conclusion of service we were treated to a wonderful sepharade
dessert
kiddush sponsored by Alain and Carole Assor.
Our thanks to Leonard Cohen for his leadership, and to Rachel
Gilor, our social chairperson, and to the ladies on her committee.
This year's Sukkot was a perfect ending to the High Holiday Season
of 5768.
