LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

September is almost here. Such an important month – the beginning of the new school or university year, often the start of a new job or career – but above all – it is when we celebrate our New Year – Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. It is a time when, if we are fortunate enough, we can make arrangements to visit and celebrate with family. It is a time when many of us draw closest to our ties to Judaism and to our past-however removed we may be for the rest of the year. For many of us (and I include myself in this category) – when our parents are no longer alive and other members of our family are far away – it is the time that we turn to our Community to link ourselves to our past and hopefully our future. This is the place where we can share our common bond.
This year your Board has worked very hard to find a Rabbi to lead our services and it has not been easy. However, I am very happy to report that an “old” friend of the Community, Leonard Cohen, is now available to lead our services. Leonard is fluent in English, French and Hebrew and has worked in several communities in Montreal as Cantor, Sheni and in other capacities. Over the years he has led many of our services and is familiar with our community. So we hope you will turn out in record numbers to welcome him back.

Due to mounting costs we have had to increase the cost of tickets this year but we hope that will not deter you. Inability to meet this cost should never be a reason for not attending services and we invite you to contact Mark or myself if this is the case.

We welcome new residents to the South Shore and I feel convinced that with the obvious growth and home-building going on here there must be some members of the Jewish faith moving out here – so we must do our best to find them, and invite them to our services.

Please fill in and return the seat application on the front page – as soon as possible- We do need this money to meet our High Holiday expenses.
So I look forward to seeing you all at our services – details and times given in “Upcoming Events”. Services will be held at our Community Centre, Place La Citiere, 50 Taschereau Blvd., La Prairie, Québec.

I wish you all a very healthy, joyous and fulfilling New Year.

SUKKOT AT BERYL’S

Mark Covet
Please join us in the celebration of the fourth day of Sukkot on Sunday September 30 2007 at 1 p.m. at the charming 19th century home of our president Beryl Tovim in St Bernard de La Colle, Quebec. A 30 minute drive exiting at Exit 1 of Autoroute 15 South, just north of Customs.
Celebrating Sukkot at Beryl's has become a SSJC tradition. It is one of our most popular and enjoyable holidays. A holiday (Hag) that everyone looks forward to. We will be sitting under a Sukkah, visiting on the lawn, and enjoying luscious pot-luck dishes prepared by our members. What a wonderful way to enjoy the last day of September. A very pleasant afternoon in the countryside is guaranteed.
Please respond by telephone or by e-mail before September 21, 2007.

GOODBYE FOR NOW

It was a difficult decision: what to let go of, the Treasury or The Bulletin? I finally chose the Bulletin, believing that the community could replace me more easily at The Bulletin than they could at the Treasury.
The Bulletin has taken up 3-4 days per month of my time. As writer, translator, and production manager, I also had to pick it up from the printer and fold and stuff the envelopes before taking them to the post office. People volunteered to help with the mailing, but help always seemed to fall by the wayside when the time came to pick it up from the printer and mail it.

The Treasury also takes a couple of days a month. It is not just a case of writing cheques and making deposits. There are also numerous reports to file, the federal and provincial tax returns, GST/QST clawbacks, annual declaration, visits to the accountant, and so forth, and with the advent of the grocery program, the volume of work at the Treasury has greatly increased.
When I decided to reduce my office hours from five days a week to four as of June 1st, my days at the office were obviously going to be busier, and I was going to have less time available for community work. Working for the community five days per month was just no longer feasible.
The work for the Bulletin will now be spread over several people, as it should be. Different people will write articles and reports, and they will find a ‘buddy’ from the other language to translate their article for them. For example, Lois might write a report, and Carolle could write the French version, or vice versa. A Production Manager will have a list of articles and photos he is supposed to receive, and he will drop them into a template and forward it to Copie Express for printing. Another member will pick up the printed copies, print out envelopes and mail the copies, while yet another member will handle the electronic mailing.
Thus, a large job will be broken up into small pieces and a different number of people will be involved in the production of every Bulletin. This is exactly how a community bulletin should be - made up of many different voices – and once in a while, I will add my voice to the tune. So pick up your pens. I will look forward to reading your articles.

BE A PART OF THE EXPERIENCE

The SSJC BULLETIN editorial staff is looking for volunteers from our community to occasionally write a short article, or send us a few pictures. This task is not meant to be a burden; but rather a way of sharing the joy and camaraderie that you experienced when you joined us in one of the many ongoing events that occur all through the year. Please email or telephone our President, Ms. Beryl Tovin, if you are interested in either writing an article describing the event that you will be attending; or bringing a camera (digital preferred), taking a few pictures, and then emailing them to Beryl for inclusion in the BULLETIN. You would truly be doing a mitzvah and helping out our whole community.
The upcoming events are all listed in this issue of the BULLETIN. Simply decide which one(s) you will be attending and let Beryl know that you will be reporting or photographing the event for us. Thank you in advance for your help. It is much appreciated.

Thank you Rosalie –
for a job very well done!

Rosalie has carried out a monumental task for the past few years, carrying both positions as Treasurer and Editor/Publisher of our Bulletin and we owe her a big vote of thanks.
She has agreed to continue as Treasurer whilst giving up the Bulletin and we are really grateful for that. Whilst we know it will not be easy to find a replacement for the Bulletin – the job of Treasurer with all the detail and Government regulations involved (as a not-for-profit organization) is particularly difficult to fill and so we are very happy that she is continuing in that role.
We thank her for her dedication and hours of work given to the production of the Bulletin and take this opportunity to put out a call to any budding journalist who would be interested in helping us with the Bulletin – to get in touch.

SIMCHAT TORAH 2007 AT OUR CENTRE

Mark Covet
We will be celebrating Simchat Torah on Thursday evening October 4 2007, at 8 p.m. at our Centre. Simchat Torah means “rejoicing over the Torah”. It is a joyous holiday (hag) and is celebrated with much merriment, and that's what we plan on doing.
Once again, we are delighted that Leonard Cohen will be officiating. In keeping with tradition there will be a Torah procession ( Hakafot ). Everyone is invited to join in the procession, including children to sing, dance and clap our hands. A dairy kiddush will follow.
I am sure we all have fond memories of the great time we had together celebrating last years Simchat Torah. I can only look forward and encourage more members to join us this year. So, let's put on our dancing shoes on October 4th and celebrate Simchat Torah together.
Please respond before September 21, 2007 to Mark Covet either by e mail or by telephone at:

SHABBAT ROSH CHODESH AT SSJC SATURDAY.

OCTOBER 13, 2007 — 9 AM

Mark Covet
In addition to leading our High Holiday Services and Simchat Torah, we are also delighted that Leonard Cohen will be leading the first of a series of Shabbat Rosh Chodesh on Saturday morning October 13 th.
On this Shabbat we will celebrate the Rosh Chodesh Heshvan, (the beginning of the Hebrew month of Heshvan). It is interesting to note that coincidentally this year Shabbat falls on the first day of Heshvan.
Shabbat is a holy day in Jewish lives. A time where we put aside our daily cares and join together in song and prayer. In a small community such as ours, we should realize that a well - attended Shabbat, adds so much more to our spiritual enjoyment and satisfaction. Following services we can all look forward to visiting and socializing over a delightful Kiddush.
Please, reserve Saturday October 13 th on your calendar now; and let our South Shore Jewish Community plan on being together..
Please respond before September 21, 2007 to Mark Covet either by e mail or by telephone at:

Telephone:450 462-1409

PLEASE RESERVE A PLACE AT THE EVENT(S) OF YOUR CHOICE (RSVP)

The BULLETIN has published a list of all the events, and their dates, for the coming 12 months. I am sure that there are at least a few events that are of interest to you, and you will be planning to join us.
Whether it’s the Rosh Hashanah / Yom Kippur services, the Purim party, listening to a speaker talking about a topic of interest to our community at one of our several Sunday Bagel Breakfasts, or maybe a Saturday Rosh Hoddesh service.
Whatever the event(s) that you plan to attend, our Social Committee would greatly appreciate it if you would just take a few seconds to telephone or email us to let us know (RSVP) that you are planning on attending; and how many others are coming with you.
Having accurate numbers will help us plan properly for the amount of food and space that we will need to help make the whole event an unqualified event.

Thank you for helping us to better help you!

Exhibition

Anne Marie Azoulay, a member of our community, will be presenting an exclusive exhibit of her paintings, prior to her tour in Europe and Israel in 2008,and invites members to visit.

GROCERY PROGRAMME

In our first year, from June 1, 2006 until May 31, 2007 we raised $70,000. of coupon sales which represents $3,500. of funds raised for the community.
Realistically, our target is $100,000. but we need to double our participants to reach this goal.
Roger Gilor and Mark Covet share the considerable work of sales. You can buy as little as $50. worth of coupons per month. Begin in August and help us reach our goal!
You can contact Mark at 450-462-1409.
