HA’SHOAH MEMORIAL EVENT
On
May 3rd, forty of our members and friends of the community
gathered in remembrance of the six million Jews killed
during World War II.
After lighting six candles in memory of the six million
fellow Jews lost during the Shoah and obeying a minute
of silence in their memory, the Honorable Fatima
Houda-Pepin, Member of the National Assembly, the Honorable Mrs. Marlene Jennings,
Member of Parliament for N.D.G, and Me. Luciano Del Negro, director general
of the Québec-Israel Committee, all joined with us to express and show
the consideration and respect they hold for the Jewish community.
The young Chloe and Mrs. Margarite Quddous, a survivor of the Holocaust, along
with Beryl Tovim, our Past-President, and Rachel Gilor, a prominent member
of our community, read poems in French, English and Hebrew. Mr. Leonard Cohen,
our spiritual leader, then recited Kaddish.
This emotional ceremony ended with a light buffet where members could reflect
on the suffering endured by our ancestors, whether during the Shoah, the inquisition,
the pogroms, while serving in Arab countries, or through acts of terrorism
in Israel.
60th
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
On Sunday, May 11th, the community celebrated Israel’s 60th birthday.
After lighting commemorative candles for the State, our soldiers, and the twelve
tribes of Israel, Mr. David Bensoussan (President of the Communauté Séfarade
unifiée du Québec) and Mr. Moshe Sadeh (President of B’nai
Brith’s Mount Royal Lodge) both addressed the community.
Following their short talks, members enjoyed a wonderful demonstration of Israeli
dances given by Mr. Maurice Perez and his wife. This was followed by an Israeli
buffet, including falafel and salads, and a birthday cake decorated with the
Israeli flag.
We also celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary of Shirley and Jack Sibalis.
Mazeltov once again to you both! More than 50 members took part in this joyous
celebration. Many thanks for your participation.

THE SSJC CELEBRATES SHAVUOT
By Samuel Elgrably
In a warm atmosphere, the SSJC celebrated the festival of Shavuot.
Marked by the originality of its program content and organization,
the event ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and brought together more
than 50 members of the community. An extension of the centre was
required for the smooth-running of festivities. The following main
elements of the program are noteworthy:
The tables were organized in a large “U”. Members took part in
reading some of the Ethics of the Fathers, otherwise known as Pirkei Avot,
or the Treaty of Principles. The readings were led by Leonard Cohen, the community’s
spiritual leader. Our members showed great interest in these readings and everyone
participated fully. Many questions were raised, and commentary and explanations
followed.
An exhibition of paintings at the centre by the artist Michel Harrouch, with
biblical and kabalistic themes and the symbolic use of Hebrew letters, was
simply fascinating. The artist explained his paintings with exceptional insight,
describing the mystic role of the Hebrew letters of the alphabet he had incorporated.
Many paintings from his art gallery were exhibited for our enjoyment.
Of course, we must not forget the traditional dairy buffet that followed. Members
were treated to a variety of delicious dairy products. The meal ended with
sumptuous deserts and cakes, tea and coffee. |
Dear Members,
Rosh Hashanah is fast approaching and a new year will soon be upon
us.
At this time each year, we feel the need to be close to our loved
ones, our relatives and our friends, and once again to see those
people we have not seen for a long time. This is surely one of
the reasons our synagogue is filled to bursting at the High Holydays.
From a community point of view, we can say that we have had a year
filled with activities and our centre has been well used, not just
for religious festivities but also for events such as bagel breakfasts
or guest presentations. We are conscious that not everyone is interested
in religious services and that some of you prefer to participate
in other kinds of events. Whatever your reason for being a member
and participating, you can rest assured that we appreciate your
presence among us.
We sincerely hope that you will join us this year and celebrate
the High Holydays in solidarity and reflection as a community.
Leonard Cohen, our spiritual leader, will be with us to guide us
in our prayers for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
I wish you all a healthy, happy, and peaceful New Year.
Sincerely, Laurence Herscu

ROSH HASHANAH
The holiday of Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation
of the world and the beginning of the Kingdom of G-d. On this
day we reaffirm our acceptance of G-d as our King. G-d judges
all of His creations on this day and decides on their fate in
the coming year.
The holiday of Rosh Hashanah is a day of intense and lengthy prayer
and restrained rejoicing. We rejoice in our acceptance of G-d's
Kingship but our rejoicing is subdued by our recognition of the
great judgment which is taking place.
The Shofar:
1. The sound of the shofar serves as a "wake-up" call
to arouse our souls to repentance.
2. Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation
of the world and is therefore the anniversary of the beginning
of G-d's Kingdom.
(Psalms 98:6), "With trumpets and the sound of the shofar
make a call out before the King, G-d".
3. The sound of the shofar was present when we received the Torah
at Mount Sinai as it says in Shemot (Exodus 19:16).
4. The sound of the shofar (which is usually made from the horn
of a ram) reminds us of when Abraham tied down his son Itzchak
to sacrifice him to G-d.
SUKKOTH
For many of us in the community, Sukkoth is one of our favourite
celebrations. It has become an SSJC tradition to hold Sukkoth at
Beryl Tovim’s country home near Hemmingford. Built in the
19th century and formerly an old farm house, her home and barn
serve as a gathering place where we help ourselves to food brought
by members of the community. Everyone brings a dish (or two!) -
a favourite salad or a favourite pie – eaten under the Sukka,
and in an autumn country setting, with music as an accompaniment,
we spend what has historically been a truly wonderful afternoon.
We will be sending you directions closer to the time, and we strongly
encourage you all to participate in this delightful event.
NOMINATIONS
A reminder to all
that September 1 – 30 is our period
for nominations to the Board. At the end of August, everyone
will
receive nomination forms and a copy of the rules in the
mail. You must
be a paid-up member to participate in the nominations process
or be. Nominees will be approved by the Annual General
Assembly on
October 26, 2008.
